Ontario's rules in plain terms
Ontario's Highway Traffic Act ties the required restraint to a child's size, not just age. In broad terms: infants ride in a rear-facing seat, toddlers move to a forward-facing seat with a harness, and older children use a booster until the adult seatbelt fits properly - commonly cited as up to 8 years, 36 kg (80 lb) or 145 cm, whichever comes first. Always follow your seat manufacturer's own height and weight limits as well, and confirm the current rules on Ontario's official car-seat guidance.
The safest rule of thumb: keep a child in each stage as long as the seat allows before moving up. A seatbelt that crosses the neck, or a lap belt that rides up the belly, means a booster is still needed.
Why a booked car beats a street taxi for kids
Ontario allows a narrow exemption that lets taxis carry a child without a car seat - but an exemption is not safety. A hailed street taxi almost never has an infant or booster seat on board, and holding a child on your lap in a moving car is exactly the risk the law's stages are designed to remove.
Booking ahead solves it: tell us each child's age, weight and height and we fit the correct seat before pickup and check the install, so your child is properly secured for the airport run. A minivan is usually the easiest vehicle - sliding doors, a low step, and room for the stroller and bags alongside the seats.
Choosing the right seat for the trip
Match the seat to the child, not just the law's minimum. Infants ride rear-facing as long as the seat allows; toddlers move to a forward-facing harness; older children use a booster until they fit the adult belt properly (usually around 145 cm). A belt that crosses the neck or a lap belt riding up the belly means they still need a booster.
