How airport taxi fares work
From Pearson, fares are regulated flat rates by zone, not a meter - about $60-75 downtown. Beyond the mapped zones it's roughly $1.90 per kilometre. A taxi hailed on the street to the airport is metered instead, which is less predictable.

What sets the fare from your city
From Pearson, the regulated GTAA tariff fixes the fare by destination zone. From other GTA cities, a prebooked flat quote is set by three things: the distance to or from the airport, the vehicle class you choose, and any extras such as child seats or additional stops. Longer runs from the outer GTA - Durham, Bradford, Orangeville - simply carry a higher flat rate, but it is still fixed before you travel.
That is the advantage of a quote over a meter: you see the whole-trip number up front from anywhere in the region, rather than watching it climb in traffic.
From Pearson vs to Pearson - direction matters
Direction matters more than people expect. Leaving Pearson, licensed taxis charge the regulated flat rate by zone - about $60 to $75 to downtown, then roughly $1.90 per km beyond the mapped zones. But a street taxi hailed the other way, into the airport, usually runs on a meter, so a rush-hour trip to Pearson can cost more than the flat rate coming out.
For departures especially, a prebooked flat quote removes that uncertainty: the price to the airport is fixed in advance, whatever the 401 is doing.
Flat rate vs meter - a worked example
Picture a Tuesday-evening trip from midtown to Pearson. On a meter, a clear run might be modest - but hit stop-start traffic on the 401 and the fare climbs with every idle minute, and you cannot know the total until you arrive.
A flat rate quotes that same trip as one fixed number before you leave. The 45-minute crawl and the 25-minute clear run cost the same. For airport trips, where traffic is unpredictable and you are watching a clock, that certainty is usually worth more than a slightly lower best-case meter fare.
