From gate to car when you land at YYZ

Landing time is not pickup time at YYZ. After the aircraft docks you have the walk to the hall, then - for international arrivals - immigration and a customs check, followed by the wait at baggage. On a busy evening when several wide-body flights land together, that can add 30 to 60 minutes before you reach the curb.

This is why flight tracking matters: your chauffeur watches the actual landing and builds customs timing into the plan, waiting in the cell-phone lot rather than circling the curb. For departures, plan to be at the terminal about three hours before an international flight and two before a domestic one, then work the pickup backwards from there.

Why Toronto's airport code is YYZ

The three-letter code YYZ is a small piece of Canadian aviation history. Most Canadian airport codes begin with Y, a convention from the early days of radio - the Y originally signalled a weather-reporting station at the airfield - and the 'YZ' portion traces to the old telegraph code for the Malton area where Pearson was built. The code stuck, and today YYZ is instantly recognisable shorthand for Toronto Pearson, even lending its name to a well-known instrumental track.

Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 at a glance

Moving between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3

YYZ's two terminals are connected by the free LINK train, which runs around the clock between T1, T3 and the airport parking and hotel areas. Most travellers never need it - but connecting passengers and anyone dropped at the wrong terminal do.
